Never cleaned the PC

May 4, 2008 - 99,634 views

I couldn’t imagine until now how a PC that has never been cleaned looks like. Fortunately, we can have a look. Just combine a lot of PC usage with no desire for cleaning and you’ll get the following result:

    24 hour de_dust server?
okay okay, too much counter strike.

    lol

  3. Sean on May 4th, 2008 12:51 pm

Judging from the look of those parts some of those pics are from relatively modern machines - I imagine it’s not just a matter of cleaning but of location. My dog sheds like crazy and my machine is located on the floor - even after 9-12 months it’s hardly dusty at all.

Methinks these machines were in a dusty basement corner next to a clothes dryer or something to have that much soot :-)

  4. Mantari Damacy on May 4th, 2008 12:54 pm

I can tell which ones came from a smoker. I had to do a similar ‘thermal repair’ on a heavy smoker’s PC. It was so thick, I was pulling strands of tobacco out from the heat sinks and fans. Totally gross.

  5. Guy on May 4th, 2008 1:02 pm

@Mantari Damacy - It’s not tobacco. It’s a mix of nicotine and dust. I don’t know any smokers that dump tobacco into their boxes.

  6. alrex on May 4th, 2008 1:36 pm

    spice :)

  7. the dude on May 4th, 2008 1:44 pm

@mantari & Guy:The only thing in smoke that is sticky would be tar.

And it’s not that. These are just in a place with a lot of dust, maybe on the floor. It could have an intake fan that sucks all the dust..

  8. Joe on May 4th, 2008 1:53 pm

Thats fairly common to see when working on computers. Many peoples PCs have that much dust in them. Smokers are the worst, you can tell by the brown colored dust. It’s all sticky and hard to clean out.

OMG. OMG. I wonder is this can happen to laptops. =/

  16. d legal on May 4th, 2008 2:44 pm

My very first PC in 1993 looked like this after a few years. It ran so good that I never thought of ever cleaning it. It’s only when things started going wonky that I had to open the case and realized just how much dust had been sucked inside.

    Why!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. nik on May 4th, 2008 4:14 pm

I used to work in tech support and our company (paper distributor) had about 10 PCs in the warehouse. After a month sitting out there, a new one would look like the above pics.

  26. someone on May 4th, 2008 5:01 pm

Weird. Coz I have a dirty apartment with lots of dust and a PC on the floor, but it doesn’t look anything like those pics… Those machines came out of the desert!

  27. CH on May 4th, 2008 5:04 pm

I see computers like this all the time. Cleaning computers from smokers smells so bad, too.

Lesson: Clean out your computer every few months at least.

  28. Jamesy on May 4th, 2008 5:17 pm

Wow, nice. I always keep my PC clean so it will run efficiently. As mentioned already location is important. A friend of mine had a computer beside a floor vent above a clay basement. Needless to say the computer was routinely dirty.

  29. Guarl on May 4th, 2008 5:56 pm

Some PCs crash on hot days because of dust impeding the cooling fans. I wonder why PC makers don’t mount a particle filter, like in vacuum cleaners and cars….

  30. Mark on May 4th, 2008 6:22 pm

I opened an outdated server at work the other day and it looked like ZZ Top. It looked #7 but with curly dust.

A good exhibition of how dust can accumulate in uncared PCs!

  33. dar7yl on May 4th, 2008 8:15 pm

I taped scotchbright (r) pads over the vents on my machine to cut down on the crap. It went from having to clean it once a month, to relatively crud free for the last 6 months.

btw - I’m a non smoker, but I have a wood stove that sometimes spews smoke into the room. (supposed to be air-tight, but you have to open the door to get wood in)

  34. Jared Lorz on May 4th, 2008 8:19 pm

I’ve seen computers in worse co ndition after one year running in Nevada.

This is not much of an accomplishment.

  35. Adam on May 4th, 2008 11:09 pm

Hahaha, this is why i use filters on my fans. The filters are made with a really fine metal screen so they don’t restrict air movement much. I barely have any dust in my computer even after several years.

  36. Michael Kean on May 5th, 2008 5:35 am

Laptops get like this too - but they’re easy to fix - just pick them up like a huge harmonica and blow into the air outlet. Be sure to wait a few seconds, or look away, before breathing in again!

  37. Ron on May 5th, 2008 7:35 am

That reminds me of a computer I tried cleaning once. It was owned by a heavy smoker. I went at it with a can of air outdoors, in the dark, without realizing what I was up against. These are the pictures of it, _after_ the can of air:

  38. Quitter on May 5th, 2008 12:04 pm

Eww that brings back memories. You can tell which are the smokers’ computers because of the brown color. I used to be a smoker until one day I was doing computer repair on a mobo completely layered with that brown funk. It made me feel so ill that I quit smoking tobacco!

  39. Merc on May 5th, 2008 12:04 pm

Bad but not the worst I’ve seen. Went to check out a PC at local City Hall. Was an old IBM Z50 I think. Popped the cover off it, jaw came unhinged. The dust and lint was so impacted, I could literally pull it off, akin to cleaning a dryers lint filter after about 3 weeks of heavy use, it was easily an inch thick, and no parts of the computer could be seen. Been in warehouses and chicken houses that had cleaner PC’s. Amazed it was even working, not to mention the possibility of burning the place down. 25 years in the business and not seen another like it. City Hall.. it figures…

Ugh, must be a smoker’s machine. Definitely not the worst I’ve seen but not one of the best.
Every time I go to a house call and I walk into the clients home and smell the tobacco and smoke I shudder because I know that’s waiting for me in their machine..

that’s sad, but, as a tech, the critters scare me alot more. I can’t count the times I’ve seen a fried roach on the traces of a mobo or in a psu. Creeeeeeeepy vermins lurks in yon circuits. ‘Ware the inards of the mystic box, it be’s pow’rful ugly in the box. Wanted to reply to something nik said: If it was a paper distributor, the dust was most likely from the paper. Environments like offices and libraries, and even hospitals (places that have lots of paper laying about) usually have a big janitorial staff. The reason for this is because most of the dust comes from paper (over 80%), and if it were left to accumulate, lets just say some folks allergies would go haywire in only a few days.

  73. Davis Jennings on June 4th, 2008 3:35 am

Forensics: Manhattan PC. Worked on lots of these. It doesn’t take too long before a system looks like this. Imagine what a doctor sees on a NYC patient!

  74. George on June 5th, 2008 5:17 pm

I used to live in a house full of smokers, and eventually picked up the habit myself after moving out (no surprise there)…

It always came to my mind to put some HEPA filters in front of the intakes…but I never did it.

  75. Brian on June 5th, 2008 8:09 pm

I’ve had to repair one worse than this for my wife’s parents. They’re a really dirty couple, smoked asstons of cigarettes in their bedroom where the computer was. I found dust about 4 inches thick and cockroaches in it.

Long story short, I told them I refused to work on it and they were better off just throwing it away.

They put it back in their bedroom, where it collects dust to this day.

  76. Bull3t on June 11th, 2008 9:41 pm

My PC frequently clogs with dust and I have to blow it out with a compressed air can (or blow threw a cooking syringe). Haha.

  77. Anonymous on June 13th, 2008 4:12 am

@Taylor Blue , It is self cleaning, just let it keep going and it will catch on fire and all the dust will burn away…and your house.

  78. Beth on July 14th, 2008 4:01 pm

We get this all the time when we show our clients the inside of their computers. They are shocked and embarrassed.

  79. Choppy Lewis on July 28th, 2008 1:45 pm

Clearly this is at a minimum 3 diferent PCs, but I think it’s more like 5. The brown colored dust on the top 2 is not regular dust, it has a high iron content. You can tell because of the way that the dust has not only bee attracted to anything electrically charged in the computer, but how it’s aligned with the electric field around the capacitors. Although I can’t imagine where that dust would come from.

  80. Ron on August 11th, 2008 8:02 pm

What is interesting to me is… You can tell the smokers from the non-smokers, by the ‘color’ of the dust! Which should be an affirmation to those that have yet to quit!
Not just for yourself, but as you can see, … this is what OTHERS around you breath!

  86. Rick on September 29th, 2008 10:41 pm

I’ve told too many people, just unscrew the case a couple of times a year, blow it out, AND DON’T LET THE DARN THING SET DIRECTLY ON THE FLOOR. Hell, set it on top of the milk crate you stole from UDF! Major difference…

  88. Chris on October 15th, 2008 1:31 am

Those look like high-end/modern parts. I bet there’s something around there. I saw one one time; the computer was only 3 or 4 years old, but it was sitting on the ground and they had thick white carpeting… When AI opened it up, I couldnt even see the parts. It was like someone stuffed the thing full of cotton balls. Guess they’re lucky they had a low-end sempron. I think it would’ve ran about 40 C without a heatsink

  89. bill on October 27th, 2008 2:32 am

Your lucky your computer didn’t overheat from all that dust. I wonder if it could have caught fire like dryers can.

  91. Derek on October 27th, 2008 5:08 pm

    Wow! Incredible!
    Did your computer still work?

  93. Lunarbunny on November 5th, 2008 6:19 pm

I dealt with donated computers and there are a couple that were worse than this. One was an old P1 machine that must have been around animals or something, as the front intake fan grille was matted with a mixture of what looked like dog hair and dust, at least a quarter inch thick. Another computer must have been in a machine shop or something, as it had an oily reddish-brown coating over all of its components - I originally thought the resistance coating was red!

  94. Frank on January 26th, 2009 8:05 pm

  97. Almon on February 13th, 2009 12:32 pm

Maybe this is why my computer is showing problems not because of software problems. My Ram was originally 5 gig but due to damage has been reduced to 1 gig. I used to clean my old computer but I got lazy so my current computer is bad. I used a small vacuum cleaner then with bristles.
