It is close to a city, but the dunes are some of the largest in the world, and you are deep in a sand bowl. The locals believe that a mermaid still lives there , just like the legend says. Tourists and Peruvians from the big cities come there and drown. It seems that the water is very deep and cold and people have a few drinks and go swimming. They go from the hot air into the cold water, and cramp up and sink. The locals believe that the mermaid pulls them down and drowns them. The facilities around the lagoon are old and dirty, maybe they have improved after rebuilding due to the earthquake. I was told that this is the last true oasis left in the Americas. I visited here twice, once in 2006 and I was there during the earthquake that destroyed a lot of the region on 15th August 2007. From what I hear the village has been repaired and everything is back to normal. Its a must see if your in Peru.
