Emma Mærsk, World’s Largest Container
Emma Mærsk, the Danish container, currently is the world’s largest container and – as of 2008 – the longest ship in use. The ship was dubbed the SS Santa due to its load – in 2006 it was headed to the United Kingdom from China loaded with Christmas goods. Luckily for the planet and for our sake, the ship has several features for protecting the environment – it can recycle the exhaust, mixed with fresh air, back into the engine for reuse.
Here are some technical data for the giant:
Length – 396.84 m, width – 63.1 m. Speed – 31 knots
Capacity – 15 000 containers. Carrying capacity – 123,200 tonnes.
Powered by a Wärtsilä-Sulzer 14RTFLEX96-C engine, weighing 2,300 tons and capable of 109,000 horsepower (82 MW).
