This pictures are bizarre, if not troubling. Gas masks in the World Wars were made as a result of poison gas attacks that took the Allies by surprise. Early gas masks were crude as would be expected as no-one had thought that poison gas would ever be used in warfare as the mere thought seemed too shocking. Still, it happened and everyone had to wear them. Adult gas masks were black while the masks for the little ones were more stylish, resembling ‘Micky Mouse’ with red rubber pieces and bright eye piece rims.

Actually not true, poison gas was never used on civillians in either war.

Actually, L, this is true. Many cities and towns handed out gas masks to their citizens.
