I think the fashion trend in Japan has gotten a little out of hand. The love for animated TV shows combined with a sligtly twisted mind results in a very aukward appearence you’d turn away from. Where are the cute girls imitating Sailor Moon?

“Aukward?”

Are you from Awkland or something?

Posted by XR | April 15th, 2008 12:42 pm

These people are just imitating their favorite J-rock & Visuak Key bands. It has nothing to do with anime.

For example, here’s Kyo from Japanese band Dir en Grey
http://sugizo.narod.ru/deg/uv/uv002.jpg
The person on pic #3 might be a huge fan of him.

In America, we call those people crazy. In Japan, they call them crazy. Nut jobs exist everywhere.

Posted by travis | April 15th, 2008 1:59 pm

I really like it. I love seeing people decorate themselves. does it really need to matter why? definitely keeps life interesting! who wants to look the same all the time anyway :)

Seems like cosplay to me

Posted by Someone | April 15th, 2008 3:23 pm

Japanese are great people. Too bad their nation is too old like Serbian.

Posted by ed | April 15th, 2008 7:01 pm

so not “new”. most of those are basic goth for japan, and the scene has been around for a very long time. cool pics, though.

Posted by Anonymous | April 15th, 2008 7:59 pm

This is hardly “new” – that look has been around for ages.

Posted by Jan Halcion | April 15th, 2008 9:08 pm

You are a vanilla dick, wrapped in a manila envelope.
What you say about Japanese culture just shows you for what you really are.

Posted by Shnins | April 15th, 2008 10:02 pm

New? The whole cos-play-zoku thing has been going on for over a decade now. If anything, this fashion “boom” has been losing steam over the past few years, not growing.

Posted by Mr. Ilarijs | April 16th, 2008 5:37 am

It’s not fashion :D

Posted by Peter Martiensen | April 16th, 2008 6:26 am

Some how these are shocking you??? I’ve been in the rave scene since the mid-90s and I’ve seen far worse.

Posted by Willow Darkling | April 16th, 2008 1:51 pm

They are all (most likely) Harajuku Girls, which is a general term for young people who hang around the Harajuku Station in Tokyo.
Harajuku Girls is a very broad general term used (mostly) by westerners and encompasses all the different Goth, Anime and Punk styles that these people follow.
Honestly I think they’re awesome, simply because their styles are usually completely outrageous, and the common denominator with these kids is “I totally don’t give a flying f**k”

Posted by Spiderlily | April 17th, 2008 8:33 am

This is to Sokobanja: “Japanese is great people”- Japanese is a culture made up of a certain ethnic group. Japanese people are great and interesting and intelligent. Secondly, “Too bad their nation is too old like Siberian.” You mean Siberia? Siberian is the culture, not the place. And their nation being old, what does that have to do with anything? The history of a place gives it character. You are a fool.

“Where are the cute girls imitating Sailor Moon?”

They are dead. They have been replaced by something far more savage and beautiful.

Posted by Korin | May 25th, 2008 6:18 am

Most of those are imitating the Japanese band Dir en Grey. 8 of them, by my count.

Posted by Expert | May 29th, 2008 4:07 pm

They aren’t imitating Dir en Grey. And this isnt new, and its not anime related.

This stuff has been around for a decade. Learn about it.

Posted by monique | June 24th, 2008 7:54 am

its a fashion trend dont hate!
if you speak english and have yet to walked the streets of japan than you have now right to speak
over there its about making a statement of newer fashion not about bringing back an old chanel look, this isnt about going back in time.
this isnt back to the past or the future its about bringing about something new
i wouldnt dress that outragous but i dam sure restpect them for coming out with something new!
everything we have seen on the runway has been there done that in many types of varifications…. so come on now its like a new invention … tho its wild and outragous i would only bet you that many of u hatttttererrrrrs will be stealing a few looks from those photographs in the near future.

Posted by monique | June 24th, 2008 7:58 am

oh yeah and if you are so into fashion stop minding other countries fashion business. they like it that way…. and its funny that they are most likely smarter than any of ussss! stricter rules!! they get to dress and act how ever the fff**** they want. so i ask why do u care? go to paris and shop for some old couture cut up shirt that we’ve seen a women sink to her death in titanic…. thats not new … more like history

Posted by Coomer | June 30th, 2008 6:07 am

Why are a few of you people dissing this? Get over it, it’s popular there, just cause you think you have more fashion sense from where ever the hell your from sure as hell doesn’t make it the truth, and doesn’t mean everyone will agree with you. Can’t you just appreciate someones style and culture and interests? These are just styles you find in Japan, it’s popular there, it’s called Gothic Lolita, or “Rave Scene” or Goth, just like Abercrombie and AE is a popular style in America.

Posted by Jessica | July 27th, 2008 12:18 am

I haven’t listened to Japanese stuff in forever but a lot of this is clearly Dir en grey stuff. I’m pretty sure these aren’t all girls either.

Posted by Erin | September 6th, 2008 9:24 pm

The New Tokyo Fashion Trend

This article has no point. This was a generalization over an entire population of DIFFERENT people. Not everyone likes Sailormoon. What these pictures are portraying is the J-Rock that is also very popular. It is pretty and creative in its own right. Stop generalizing!!

Looks to be mostly Dir en grey cosplayers.

its sad that these girls decide that this is how they can look cool when what they are realy doing is destroying there bodies by puting on huge holes in there bodies and piercing them and even puting tatoos when they are older they will regret what they did whan their skin is hangig to there knees and they are coverd whith tatoos

Posted by Mo | January 28th, 2009 10:39 am

Love it! I love the fact they are expressing themselves beyond the steretotypical “little cute Japanese schoolgirls”. Besides most of the time they don’t walk around like this (you won’t find them at school dressed like this). They usually go the hot spots (like Shibuya) and hang around to be seen…to express themselves.

Posted by Privtni Smestaj Sokobanja | February 4th, 2009 4:16 pm

Posted by Dianna | February 9th, 2009 5:44 am

Let them dress like they want to, at least in Japan u can do that.

I think everyone should dress like they want to. I hate when people make fun of the others because they don’t have the last trend dressed.

God bless Japan Fashion

lol,

thats not sailor moon,

alot of them are dir en grey cosplayers,Japanese fashion is sorta crazy, but thats what makes it cool.

Posted by Moo Sama | July 13th, 2009 9:47 pm

I seriously face palmed after seeing this page…
As mentioned above, all of these people are cosplaying (cotuming) as Japanese musicians from very famous musical groups in Japan that partake in a fashion called “Visual Kei.” Some bands that you can Google to shed some light as to what these bands look like are Ayabie, Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer, and Moi Dix Mois.
A good majority of these, however, are cosplays of the band Dir en Grey’s early-to-mid-90′s outfits.
Before trolling their style and steryotyping “cute Japanese fashion,” learn before you type.

um honey its nothing new its been around for a long time ever since the 80s and its not like its what everyones wearing here in japan, we have open minds.

we are not like you please don’t insult this fashion lifestyle since its a way of uniqueness and that is visual kei, there’s gyaru too, gangyaru hime gyrau, onee-gyaru and there’s much much more even one’s that are bland and boring that look like something a stupid american would wear i really don’t find that fashionable so go look at your magazines and try to imitate other people while i be unique.

this is among the stupidest blog post i have ever seen.
