The World’s Biggest Spiderweb

February 28, 2008 - 2,003 views

This might be one of the biggest, if not the biggest spiderweb ever found. This huge web was found covering 180 meters of trees and bushes by the employees of park Lake Tawakoni in Texas. It’s not yet clear if this “work of art” has been made by a single or a colony of spiders. The web was initially white, but turned dark when all the mosquitoes got caught in it. Also, nothing was said about the species of spider found at the location. Until further information is provided, here is the huge white web.

  4. Television Spy on February 29th, 2008 12:57 pm

    Isn’t that a cob-web, I don’t think it’s a spider-web.

  5. HAL on February 29th, 2008 2:56 pm

    @Television Spy:

Cobwebs are spider webs and spider webs are cobwebs. Cobweb is derived from the middle English word “coppeweb” from coppe — meaning spider.

‘It’s not yet clear if this “work of art” has been made by a single or a colony of spiders.’

It’s a colony, obviously. Why would you even suggest otherwise?

I don’t usually consider myself afraid of spiders, but there is no way I am going anywhere near that.

  10. Kent on February 29th, 2008 3:16 pm

Cob-webs are just old spiderwebs, are they not?

  11. techsys on February 29th, 2008 3:17 pm

to bad it has nothing to do with water… then the appropriate line would be “we’re gonna need a bigger boat”

  12. subcorpus on February 29th, 2008 3:39 pm

    whats the difference between a cob-web and spider-web …?
    spider-webs are pretty neat eh … ???

  13. JJ Walker on February 29th, 2008 3:41 pm

    Nope… definitly a Tangle web.

  14. keviv on February 29th, 2008 3:44 pm

From the wikipedia definition of cobweb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobweb)

    * A spider web - cobweb is an alternate word, derived from the Middle English coppeweb (from coppe, meaning “spider”, a word that was introduced to England by Dutch invaders and originally pronounced ‘kab’).

  15. charles orangejuice roy on February 29th, 2008 3:45 pm

INCREDIBLE these spiders have probably spun one of the largest community webs spun in historry, i quess that means lots of mating and lots of feeding on all the 0WN3D males in the group!

  16. Jesse on February 29th, 2008 3:54 pm

I live in the Dallas area and my mom lives out there at the lake and I went to see it. It is only about an hour from the Dallas and totally worth it. Very creepy.

  17. RTM on February 29th, 2008 3:55 pm

TVSpy: Cob-webs are old spider webs.

  18. Nick on February 29th, 2008 4:03 pm

Thousands of spiders created that web, seem to remember the same picture being in the paper about 6 months ago :)
    Still amazing though.

  19. Mike on February 29th, 2008 4:10 pm

I used to think a cob-web and spider web were different. I looked it up and it turns out that they are made by tiny spiders - cob spiders.

As for the web - I would hate to walk into that in the middle of the night…

  20. noneya on February 29th, 2008 4:13 pm

usually cobwebs happen as dust culminates on ceilings, corners or in sheds - not outside where wind and elements can easily destroy them..

  21. OneHandBandito on February 29th, 2008 4:18 pm

Burn it down. I hate spiders.

  22. vic on February 29th, 2008 4:33 pm

That is so beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like this. Its breath taking. At the same time I must say it is also a little scary.

  23. m on February 29th, 2008 4:37 pm

It’s a colony of spiders. This was reported several months ago.

  24. Daniel on February 29th, 2008 4:48 pm

Umm, a cob-web and a spider-web are synonyms. It does remind me of those Oak Tree worms, though: http://www.realgreenlawns.com/photogallery/photo31387/tree stuff 047.jpg

  25. sammy on February 29th, 2008 4:50 pm

Cob webs are made by spiders.

  26. Jason on February 29th, 2008 4:56 pm

    WHOA! That’s insane!

    …. and creepy…..

  27. DMoney on February 29th, 2008 4:58 pm

A cobweb is a spiderweb. Cobwebs are made by cobweb spiders (aka Tangle-web or comb-footed spiders). Either way this thing is pretty huge!

  28. Robin on February 29th, 2008 5:01 pm

Damn, that web is huge! I dont like spider at all. Not that i’m affraid or something there just a bit creepy. But he, this looks pretty cool. :D

Great… thanks… now I will be having nightmares for weeks… as if the Hillary nightmares weren’t enough to keep me up at night reading dirty french novels, now I am going to have to take some noDoz, red bull tall boys, and a heavy dose of hunter s thompson.

That’s not real. I think that’s one of those fake webs that you can get at a gag store.

  35. Grande Will on February 29th, 2008 6:00 pm

That just made my spine tingle! Freaky!!!

  36. Someoneiswrong! on February 29th, 2008 6:07 pm

Uh… do you really think one spider could do that?? It’s a whole bunch of them.

  37. JMC on February 29th, 2008 6:09 pm

I would be really scared to be down there, even in a golf car!

  38. mikey on February 29th, 2008 6:10 pm

    no, i think it’s the interwebs….

i’m glad the finally found it!

  39. Hello on February 29th, 2008 6:16 pm

A cob-web and a spider-web, is the same thing, so i guess you are partly right.

  40. Gosoft on February 29th, 2008 6:23 pm

Are those birch trees? There is a bug that make cocoon like homes on birch trees. This doesn’t look like a spider’s web. these insect are know as Birch Leaf Rollers. It looks to me as if that is what you are seeing in the picture.

  45. livinlizard on February 29th, 2008 7:02 pm

This had park officials stumped on the builder, but after this photo was published, experts explained it as multiple spiders, all breeds working together, for one common objective….Yummy, squishy flies.

  46. Chris on February 29th, 2008 7:10 pm

It’s a web. Made by spiders. Thus, it is a spider web.

  47. matt on February 29th, 2008 7:33 pm

What frightens me is that I’ve been there…

Needless to say, I will never, ever, ever go back.

Spiders give me the frikken willies… especially ones that make webs the size of a small country.

    go finalgear!

  53. Stone on February 29th, 2008 10:24 pm

actually it is a spider-web, not all spiders sin spiral webbing, some have chaotic styled approaches such as the Black Widow, others coat surfaces in webs such as our little friend in the picture above or even ground spiders such as a the Trap-Door spider. Although this web above was not created by one spider, it is created by a colony, so-to-speak, of these particular spiders, they just coat everything. Having a problem with bugs, get a few of these for your garden :)

  54. Walrus on March 1st, 2008 12:17 am

Why are some spider webs called cobwebs.

Cobweb comes from the Middle English or Middle Dutch word for spider,
    coppe, web.
