Now you have to appreciate combining a sporty style with a classic or finding clothes that do fit a person of their stature. Leave common sense at the entry please!

I don’t understand it
I would say race has nothing to do with it. There were whites, hispanics (did you see the token asian in one?) in these photos. It’s really a class issue. Poor black people and poor white people have more in common than their wealthier brethren.
And with poor socioeconomic status, the greater likelihood your mama is a seamstress, which is the only way I can fathom such an atrocious crime against anything approaching taste, decency, or even fashion could happen.
I’d hit that.

Haha. I am white and these posts make me laugh at white people. I am sorry fellow race members, but we generally don’t understand having style and expressing individuality in the same ways. It is foreign to us. Instead having unique names, we have the same safe normal names Robert Steven Charles III. And clothes? same stuff as ever. About as far wild as we went was zubas in the 90s.
Part of the reason has to do with skin color. I make tie dyes and I can attest that bright colors look better against darker skin. With lighter skin, black, white and grey look good, that’s about it.
What we white people are comfortable with is what makes us feel safe - uniformity, consistency, boringness. We don’t even know what we like, we rely on copying other peoples tastes so that we feel like our choices will fit in.
So it is no surprise that when we see an expression of fun and beauty in another culture, we feel threatened and try to be defensive by slighting that creativity so that we can fee like we aren’t square.

I’m glad there are people looking at this from a socio economic issue than a racial one…. Outside of that there is a saying that, “That preference is something that should never be argued.” Can you honestly say argue that apples taste better than pears? The same goes for fashion…
Lets just hope these people grow out of it… if they don’t then our generation is screwed

It appears to be your motif to denigrate ‘your race’ (but in actual fact, just yourself). If you have a problem with self-esteem, don’t take it out on everyone else.

Had you said: “I’m afraid that dressing up like a gangster doesn’t constitute individuality” maybe you would have been right, but doesn’t it take quite the individual to go against what other people think-especially if those people think it’s overdone? And I’m afraid individuality isn’t just going against the crowd either-it’s doing what you do, regardless of anyone else, even when you’re doing things like everyone else. And these people seem to be doing just that. Quite individual.

And I don’t see anything about seeing “fun and beauty.” I saw something about “an expression of fun and beauty”, which is hardly the same thing. What is beautiful and what is fun is definitely in the eye of the beholder, but it doesn’t take much mental flexibility to surmise that what we may think is dumb and ugly could be someone else’s “expression” of just the opposite. So no, there is nothing contradictory with what was said. And you’re not right because he’s wrong-not only because he isn’t, but because that’s not the way it works. Or maybe I’m just being obtuse.

Illy and Ian, are you seriously trying to paint these people as anything other than the disgrace to society that their society has become? And I am not talking about a racial thing, I’m talking about a lifestyle thing that mostly pertains to a certain race. These pics are just scraping the top of the perverse culture these people want to exonerate, enhance, and pass for a normal culture. Well, it isn’t normal. Ian La essentially staked the claim that all these pictures are proof-positive examples of individuality, and therefore cannot be construed any other way; for if they WERE construed in a different manner, that would diminish Ian’s premise. I mean come on; what makes more sense given the widespread effects of television and of teenage social behaviors? That all of these kids are expressing their most intimate, individual selves, or that they’re dressing up to impress their peers/dates?

- I see what you’re saying, but again your response is missing the context in which I made my initial statements. I’m not saying that “my cognitions of fun and beauty are the only ones that matter”, what I’m saying is that IAN’S comments about white’s being fearful of the beautiful aspects of other cultures because of a need to not appear “square” is dimwitted.
In closing, I don’t have issues with self-esteem. I have issues with people being so sure of their own volitions as to have the audacity to speak on behalf of others. It tends to breed an invalid generalization in the minds of the audience who may already be leaning into that train of thought.

I put a collection of pictures together to illustrate the unfairness of the treatment of a young woman who was arrested and kicked out of her prom in Houston earlier this year and sent it to some close friends and family. Unfortunately most of these ended up on this website. Also unfortunate is the fact that collection of pictures had the examples illustrating the equally distasteful dress of lower class Caucasian kids removed so that they were taken out of context. Poor taste is not a question of race (whatever race means). The US is full of people of all colors who are crude and tasteless. Based on the comments on this page, no doubt many of the folks criticizing these young people are no better. I was attempting to illustrate a general coarsening of our society as our young people, white, black, asian and otherwise need better guidance on what is appropriate and inappropriate dress. However unattractive the dress of these young people appear, the souls of those cruelly judging these kids are infinitely more twisted and unattractive. This was never meant to offer any commentary on any one ethnic culture. I am deeply sorry to the kids that this happened and offer my sincerest apologies. The rest of you numbskulls need to get a life.

Class has everything to do with this obvious display of ignorance, not race. Not to mention, I would KILL my daughter if she even THOUGHT about going to prom dressed in such a way, it is disgusting and whorish, but then again I wouldn’t RAISE my daughter to even have thoughts of dressing this way, pop into her mind. It is so disgusting that people even think this is acceptable. Why would a school even PERMIT CHILDREN to come to prom this way?? Our society is all screwed up, that’s why! We have got to do something about this problem and let the media and our youth KNOW THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!
Questions about race and socioeconomic status aside, my biggest problem is with the parents that let their teenage daughters out of the house in these outfits. You don’t have to be rich, or white, to be a decent parent and learn how to say “no” to your kids.

if you even look at the prom space, can’t you tell that the school was being cheap? their “red carpet” is a cheap piece of plastic, the photographer was horrible, and there are brick walls!
I just graduated highschool, and prom was the most anticipated event of senior year. every girl wants her dress to be memorable and thats exactly what i think everyone at this prom thought.
i can understand the overexposure and short dresses because young girls these days want to be sexy and to be the center of attention so that every guy with another girl will focus on her not his date. the team jersey dresses was just a fashion trend.the prom is from 2003, I live in Oakland and in 2003, everyone, including girls wore jerseys. but that trend is fading.

I wanted to give the prospective of someone who has watched the change in Hip Hop culture over the last 20 years. We started with our pants sagging a little and no shoe laces (The Run DMC days) to sagging a little lower and less respect for those that paved the way for our freedom (the Tupac and biggie days). We are now at the stage where we have completely given up our dignity and walk with our pants completely off of our A$$(Weezey and Jeezey days). My point is we had to see this coming. We have gone from dressing in style to accepting no class as a culture.
Income and race has nothing to do with it. From white kids with green her and tattoos to black kids with diamond in thier teeth, tong rings, tattoos and their A$$ out, we have lost our way. The children in these photos will become the mothers and fathers of our next generation. The photo’s of their prom will be past down to their children and the next generation will view them and try to take the bar even further down, just like we did. When my mother told me to put on a belt and dress like a man I did not like it. Now I see the damage that can be done when we lower our expectations for ourselves. This is not our culture! We are better than this! I hope my daughter looks at Michelle Obama and not Lachelle the future strip as a model. Final thought, if these are the student that graduated, God help those that did not.
