The Amazing Chand Baori Well

August 29, 2008 - 2,836 views

Built in the 10 century in Abhaneri, India, the Chand Baori well was a great solution for the water problems back then. With the harsh weather conditions of the region, people were forced to dig ever deeper to find water. The amazing step wall building is a great example of the architectural excellence present in India a millennium ago. Chand Baori is one of the deepest step wells in India, with 3500 narrow steps and 100 feet deep (approximately the size of a 13-storey building). You might also know the fountain from being featured in the movie “The Fall“.

All those steps looks like a bad Escher print.

The “green stuff” at the bottom is a water plant on top of the water. Maybe some sort of duck weed. Though without getting a closer look that’s purely a guess as to the type of plant.

That green stuff is algae. The well is fenced off for most of the public to enter the lowest depth, and if you’ve ever seen a pond that remains untouched, the green stuff grows on top. Just because it’s green, it doesn’t mean it’s dirty; it’s actually quite the opposite, green algae acts like a filter and cleans water. Google it sometime.
