Those are futons, same as you’d get in a $200 European hotel.
“Boxsprings” are way too 1960’s, ha-ha.
Where exactly in China was this?
I’ve around China myself, and I can tell you that such deals are in basically every part of the country you might visit. There are, of course, higher class rooms and hotels if you want to spend more, but the option of spending less and getting a room like this is there.
You also forgot to mention that the hotel doubles as a snuff production studio for tourists.

2 bucks! hard to believe also fo China. BTW try to find anything near to 2 bucks in Beijing or other busy city, I think around 15 USD is the cheapest hotel you can find there.
