The Plot

In Our Family Wedding, Lucia(America Ferrara)-a Latina, and Marcus(Lance Gross)-an African-American- get engaged and announce their plans to marry to their families. Preparing for a wedding is enough of a challenge as it is, but things get even worse when their culturally diverse family members are at odds. While Lucia’s mom (Diana Maria Riva) goes way over the top to create a huge wedding, her overprotective dad Miguel (Carlos Mencia) and Marcus’s dad Brad(Forest Whitaker) are in a constant battle of wills. As the craziness escalates, the situation appears to be growing worse.
Will true love triumph or will the engaged couple’s family put an end to their future together?

The Good

* In spite of the predictability that goes with films of this ilk, this movie has its good moments..
* America Ferrara’s charm shines, despite the fact that this is not the best role her talents deserve.
* Regina King always adds downhome class to any film she graces..
* How can you not laugh at Carlos Mencia?
* It’s mildly entertaining..
* Despite the expected stereotypes, the characters are still likable..
* IÂ like Lupe Ontiveros, a much under-appreciated character actress.

The Bad

* Nothing new or surprising.
* I wasn’t digging Forest Whitaker too much in the comedy role. Somebody like Steve Harvey or Cedric the Entertainer would have been better in the role as Marcus’s father.
* Some of the shtick goes on way too long..

The Verdict

Our Family Wedding is worth checking out, but had I utilized my ESP, I may have opted to check out a matinee. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not mad at paying full price.
