The Best TV Programs Of The Week (2/14/10 to 2/20/10)
THE TIGER WOODS ANNOUNCEMENT (MEDIA)
On Friday, scandalized golf superstar Tiger Woods finally came out of hiding to address his serial philandering. He had not been heard from nor seen publicly since his Thanksgiving Day vehicle accident and the subsequent disclosures from multiple beauties that he tipped on his wife with them.
During Woods’s 14-minute announcement he admitted his actions, took personal responsibility, defended his wife and apologized to family, friends, fans and business colleagues he had “disappointed.” Devoid of his usual swagger and arrogance, he seemed like a beaten man who was painfully uncomfortable with having to admit his wrong doing.
The news media has not been happy, since they were not allowed to attend to ask questions. Tiger spoke before a carefully chosen audience in a controlled environment, obviously to avoid being confronted with embarrassing questions.
Whether you think Tiger was sincere or not, it was a riveting moment of television. It will be fascinating to see what happens from this point on

TABATHA’S SALON TAKEOVER (BRAVO)
This reality show features Tabatha Coffey, who goes to individual unsuccessful salons each episode to attempt to give them advice to turn them around for the better. I watched a Tuesday marathon of the show and was totally fascinated to see how poorly most of these businesses were run. While some wisely took Tabatha’s advice, there were others who stubbornly refused to yield.
One particularly memorable episode featured a Miami Beach salon owner named Nikki, who was evil incarnate. She watched her staff Big Brother style via surveillance cameras, criticized them until they were all demoralized and, after Tabatha’s changes were implemented, foolishly went back to her old ways after Tabatha left.
I am not into hair salons, but this show is surprisingly fun to watch.
SOME LIKE IT HOT (TCM)
I almost hate the fact that February is nearly over because of TCM’s month long tribute to films that have earned or been nominated for Oscars.
Some Like It Hot, another one of my favorite flicks, was aired this week and the 1959 Billy Wilder comedy is as hilarious now as it was when it first came out.
Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon star as Joe and Jerry, two jazz musicians during the Roaring 20’s. After witnessing a mass murder by the mob, they disguise themselves as Josephine and Daphne to get into an all-girl band. When the band travels to Miami to play a gig, Joe creates yet another alter ego, pretending to be a wealthy oil tycoon, in order to seduce Sugar Kane, the band’s voluptuous blonde singer, played by Marilyn Monroe. Things get even more madcap when “Daphne” is pursued by Osgood Fielding III. Comedian Joe E. Brown plays Osgood and almost steals the picture.
When the mobsters Joe and Jerry are fleeing from end up in the same Miami hotel where they are, matters get sticky. The end of the movie, especially the last line, is classic.
