Albino - A Bird’s Eye View

August 21, 2008 - 263 views

So far I’ve seen albino animals, but when it comes to people, the issue is slightly different. According to medical statistics, about one in 20 thousand people is white and red-eyed, suffering from albinism.

In an effort to beat the blues, African albinos are planning to organize a network of clinics, which will provide medical assistance to adults and help parents of children with albino children. Albinos from Malawi have managed to register their organization - Albino Association of Malawi (AAM). There’s also an annual conference hel by American Albinos where they try to fight against prejudice and superstition, exchange medical information and try to improve their situation. The mortality rate of people with white skin is significantly higher in African countries, since there is intense sunlight and few can afford sunscreen. In what follows, we’ll take a look at a day in the lives of Albino people from around the world. For deeper look, check the Bianca’s blog.

But not everywhere in the world the same situation … In Africa, life-Blacks Albino remains difficult today. For example, the black population of Malawi suspiciously refers to people with pale skin colour and light hair. And if black parents in the family born child-Albino, they are experiencing this event seriously, believing chad inferiority.

In the United States defends the right Albino Organization representatives albinism and gipopigmentizma (OPAG), which its members are commonly referred to as simply “The Union colorless”.

And these photos from the site of the society, opened in 1997, former fashionable photographer Richard Guidotti and Diane McLean - they work with people living with genetic disabilities …

Just a few things. Most people with albinism prefer the term “person with albinism” etc. I know, might seem PC, but many of us have had the term “albino” yelled at us in a negative way and it’s a big deal to some.

Also, people with albinism don’t have red eyes. Our eyes can appear red in bright lights because of transillumination of the iris, but actually our eye color is usually blue.

And the organization in the US is NOAH. http://www.albinism.org.
