Wacky’s Best TV Programs of the Week(2/21/10 to 2/27/10)
XXI WINTER OLYMPICS (NBC)
Believe it or not, I actually found something that wasn’t snore-worthy on the Winter Olympics.
Thanks to the U.S. hockey team, there was finally some real action for Neanderthal man sensibilities. It was very cool to see the Americans trounce Canada 5-3 on Sunday to go the quarterfinals.
There’s nothing more gratifying than kicking the host country’s butt at a game they think they own.
PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE (ENCORE)
This 1985 comedy flick featuring comedian Paul Ruebens as supreme nerd Pee Wee Herman is a guilty pleasure of mine. Director Tim Burton turned the simple tale of a weird, pasty-faced child-man in a cross-country search for his missing bike into an absurdly hilarious adventure as Pee Wee meets a host of other weirdos along the way, including Large Marge-the ghost of a dead truck driver, Mickey-an escaped convict and a group of Hell’s Angels-type bikers. Who could ever forget the goofy “Big Shoe Dance?”
It’s as silly and gloriously ridiculous as it was 25 years ago.
KINDERGARTEN (HBO)
In a week where I struggled to find anything I really liked to watch, I have to say that a wonderfully simple program struck me as kind of touching.
It’s a weekly half hour documentary that focuses on the one year experiences of a kindergarten class of 23 students and their teacher. After being jaded by watching so many television shows filled with adults who are perverse, self-serving and annoying, it was refreshing to see some sweet, innocent kids so fresh faced and full of enthusiasm for life.
Of course, the series was originally filmed back in 2001, so some of these little darlings are probably angst-ridden teens with belly rings and DUI’s now.
