Satirical Maps of Europe
Vintage stuff is way underrated, especially when you see such great artwork forgotten by time. We’ve come across some satirical maps that describe in a humorous fashion Europe’s situation as seen during the first World War. Here are the artworks:

Het Gekkenhuis (Oud Liedje, Nieuwe Wijs)
{approx: The Insane Asylum (Old Song, Newly Wise (or ‘new tune’?)}
(by Louis Raemaekers; Amsterdam, Senefelder [pub.] 1915)

Humoristische Karte von Europa im Jahre 1914
(by K. Lehmann-Dumont; Leutert & Schneidewind, Dresden, 1914)

Sommerschau über Europa 1915
{Summer Review of Europe, 1915}
(by Lucas Gräfe; Hamburg, AK [pub.], 1915)

Gedrängte Frühjahrsübersicht von Europa im Jahre 1915
{approx: Compact Overview of European Spring, 1915}
(by Lucas Gräfe; Hamburg, AK [pub.], 1915)

European Revue - Kill That Eagle
(by J. Amschewitz; London, Pub. by “Geographica”, 1914)

“Hark! hark! The dogs do bark!”
(note by Walter Emanuel; London, G.W. Bacon & Co. 1914)

Karte von Europa im Jahre 1914
(by W Trier; Berlin, 1914)

Satyrische Europa Karte Weltkrieg 1914
{Satirical Map of Europe in the World War 194}
(by E Zimmerman; Hamburg, W. Nölting [pub.], 1914)
High resolution maps can be found here. Thanks Peacay!

Steven G. Harms2008-08-06 23:21:20The Dutch in the first map ( “kaart” ), says “oud liedje, nieuwe wijs” Literally: "An old little tune, new mode” I would try to translate that more idiomatically in English as: “A familiar tune, new refrain” or, more idiomatically yet "New verse, same as the first”

senthil2008-08-06 23:36:22where can i find higher resolutions of these maps ?
Dude2008-08-07 00:14:41Could you post higher resolution images? These are great, but are not of sufficient quality for printing.
Dude2008-08-07 00:22:53these were probably lifted from http://www.flickr.com/photos/85009674@N00/2721592095/in/photostream/ That stream has them all. Pretty lame to show images with limited resolution and not reference the source. Don't bother replying to [email protected], I just use that email whenever one is required. I have no idea who that person is.
rabb2008-08-07 01:11:30In regards to Stephen Harms, a mode is actually a scale of music. I.E. a song could be played in another scale making it sound, sadder, move lively, more sexy... and so on. So if the cartographer meant modes in that sense, then the Dutchmen would have simply meant, the song was the same, but the elements within the song had changed.

Francis Caestecker2008-08-07 21:45:33As a Belgian, I can say that: "Oud liedje, nieuwe wijs" Means: "Old song, new way (of singing it.)" Wijs is old-Dutch for "wijze", which means "way". Like the way you do something. wijze [de ~ (m),de ~] (methode) method [the ~] way [the ~] methodology [the ~] manner [the ~] mode [the ~] course [the ~]
