   Amazing!!! Why cant my caountry do such things?? we are neighbour yet have so much different very dissapointed..

   Why can't your country do such things? Well, because your country is most likely spending its money on things like building up it's infrastructure...things like hospitals, schools, wellfare, social services, military, fire and rescue, decent roads, subsidized housing, food stamps, handicapped assistance, parks and recreation, medicare, veteran support services, medical and health related research, animal welfare services, foreign aid for natural disasters.... Look, here in the United States, at any given time, we are experiencing anywhere between 3 to 10 natural disasters...Floods, tornados, hurricanes, cyclones, fire, blizzards, ice storms, earthquakes, volcanos, landslides, drought, diseases, terrorist attacks...In fact, as I write this, there are fires in Florida and California, a blizzard in North Dakota, damaging hail, tornados and flooding in Colorado...any one of these natural disasters would be crippling for any third world country, yet here in the United States, we take them in stride...Why? because we don't have thousands die from an earthquake....or tens of thousands die in flooding...And how is it that the United States can absorb such horrific disasters and still function as the leader of democracy in the world? It's the billions we spend on infrastructure! We put in place the support mechanism to protect the people*BEFORE* we put the people in place...it's just that simple! It's just a quick matter of checking out the wikipedia on natural disaster deaths to see that the vast majority of deaths occur in countries who steal from their citizens to line the pockets of the politicians *instead* of putting in place things as simple as roads and sewers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_natural_disasters_by_death_toll) And sure...our politicians also line their pockets with our tax dollars...but you know what? Even after we make those politicians rich, we still have the money to support a diverse and well designed infrasture! It's that which makes the United States great! Ed

   To the nameless weenie who doesn't have the b@lls to post a name (whether it's really your name or not)...your liberalism is showing.... Sure, we can feed the world's hungry, we can house the world's homeless and make everybody in the world equal...well, you know what? I don't want to be equal! I want to be *BETTER* Look, we give over $20 billion in foreign aid (latest bill signed recently). Name one other country that does that! I'm all for giving money to those that need it, but if you don't want to pull yourself out of the gutter, then good riddance! I believe in helping those who help themselves, not outright hand-outs! Personally, I don't think we should give any money to any country who does not put a certain percentage of their GDP into the support of their country's infrustructure! In 1985, an earthquake hit Mexico city killing thousands and creating billions in damage. The United States was the first ones there with aid, and we gave the Mexican government a loan and we guaranteed a loan to the WHO for Mexico. Out of the hundreds of millions of dollars we loaned them, how much have they paid back? None...In fact, we are paying off their WHO loan as well! In fact, who is the first responder to ANY natural disaster that occurs anywhere in the world...Yup, it's us...the United States! Now, name *ONE* country that came to our aid on Hurricane Katrina and the New Orleans disaster? How many countries send us aid to help in the forest fires we seem to have yearly in California? Who sent us aid when Mount St Helens erupted in 1980 killing 57 people and destroying thousands of acres of land and houses? Or where did we get aid during the Chicago heat wave in 1995 where over 700 people died? Wanna know who? *NO ONE* that's who... Sure, everybody cries and whines that the United States doesn't do enough to support the needy in the world, but you know what? The world doesn't do enough to support the needy in the United States! You want equality? Then start with those countries who refuse to participate in world needs (China, India, Mexico and to some extent Russia) Why is it out responsibility to babysit the world? I say to you, take off your "rose colored glasses" and see the world for what it reallly is...a bunch of crying babies who all want to suckle on the United States Te@t! Ed <-and yes, that's really my name! L O S E R !

   I loved the bridge, don't care if the whole country dies in natural disasters! don't care if the whole world dies with the progress of USA and all their dejects in the rivers and air! don't care ... but the bridge is great, love it!

   @ Ed; You seriously don't have a clue. The U.S. is spending a very very tiny fraction of their budget on development aid (check your statistics; see for example Jeffrey Sachs), it is actually embarissing. Dude, please, try to see the total picture. And I'll help you; both Australia and the Netherlands offered help after Katrina hit New Orleans. Countries that are experts on hydraulic engineering. But you know who did not came to aid: The U.S. themselves (or better; the central government, president Bush). They actually refused the help and did... uhm... nothing.

    Been there, done that took a picture. Anyway it is a nice bridge for tourism. But i wonder if they are able to maintain the bridge. Maintenance is not one of Malaysia's strong points ;)

    For the record Ed is mostly correct. As far as New Orleans perhaps you need to look past your pathetic hate for GWB. The Bush lied, people died crap can only go so far. You might want to do some research on how the mayor and the governor handled it at the time. They were far worse than the feds could of ever been. I lived through Charlie and a few smaller storms in FL. We helped each other, we did not loot. We went to shelters that were properly designed as such when told to. No one was crying about GWB then.
